Translated Poems  - Farrokh Tamimi

Sleep

On the long  page of the street

every man is a sentence

every woman is a sentence

                                too

on the long page of the street

In our town

a glass of beer , a cup of coffee , a hello

- like words of conjunction -

graft the word of pas sentences.

Vessels of the gutter , made of brick

conduct the amoebae of satisfactory torpor

through narrow, muddy alley ways

to the sickly , dying houses.

My glass

your glass

his glass

filled. as ever , with the amoebae of torpor...

In the bar we drink to somebody's health

chink , chink

cheers

cheers

cheers

towards midnight

on the long page of the street

a sentence was engraved.

the tall lamp-post which has a wakeful eye

grafts, with the filthy connective of a rope

 the sense of the sentence

                    to hollow days.
